IS THE MALE DOGS THE RIGHT DOG FOR YOU

ENTIRETY

It is essential when choosing a male puppy to ensure that it is (entire)i.e that it has two testicals descended into the scrotum.
Thw testicals may retract temporarily in a young puppy and the seller may be optimistic that the puppy will become entire in time, but a veterinary surgeon can give you an informed opinion when the puppy is about eight weeks old.

Dogs which are monorchids, (more correctly, unilateral cryptorchids, with only one testicle descended into the scrotum) can sire puppies, but as the condition is hereditary such a puppy is an unwise buy, since it has greater than normal chance of not being entire.

Cryptorchidism is important to the buyer even if there is no intention of using the dog at stud.  A testical retained within the adbomen is particularly susceptible to growths (tumours) which can affect the whole hormonal system, and may be life-threatening if they spread to other parts of the body.

HOUSE-TRAINING
Male dogs are often slower to house-train than bitches.  Dogs squate to urinale ubtil they are adolescent, when the customary leg-raising posture is adopted to facilitate territory marking.

MALE ADOLESCENCE
In late puppyhood, during the adolescent phase, a young male may experience an upsurge of hormones making him indulge in excessive sexual behaviour.  If the dog is suitably discouraged, this behaviour will often prove only transient.

WANDERING
Male dogs are more motivated to wonder from home than females.  Security gates and fencing of a height to enclose the dog is essential.  For dogs with the inclination to dig or burrow, fencing must be buried in the ground.

USE AT STUD
It is unwise to allow a dog to be used at stud to oblige a casual request.  .
It is unfair to keep a male dog, which is not to be used at stud, with entire bitches which are undergoing regular oestrous cycles.
The owner of a pet male will be wise to "screen" bitches which may accompany visitors to the house, and request that they be left at home if they are coming into oestrus.  An encounter with such a bitch on his ownterritory can be upsetting to the male and will almost inevitably lead to territory marking, even indoors, which may get the male into undeserved trouble.

CONTRACEPTIVE MEASURES FOR MALE DOGS

HORMONES
Consult your veterinary surgeon about a hormonal preparation which may be given by injection to male dogs to mimic the effects of castration in respect of behaviour.  However, such injection may not affect fertility.

VASECTOMY
In this operation the tubes that transport the sperm from the testicles are cut, so rendering the  dog unable to sire puppies, but still able and willing to perform a mating act.  Such a dog is sometimes used as  "teaser" in breeding kennels.  Since this operation does not affect the dog's behaviour, it will still be interested in mating bitches and may still roam, so it is not of relevance in the domestic situatiom.

CASTRATION
Castration involves removal of the testes from the scrotum, leaving the dog with an empty scrotal sac which is not unsightly.  Although rhe operation is carried out under general anaesthesia it does not require abdominal surgery and healing is usually rapid.  The operation is performed;
(a) To render a dog sterile when his services as a stud are unwanted.
(b) To help overcome hyper-sexual behaviour which has persisted beyond adolescence, particularly inter-dog aggression and the tendency to roam to seek out bitches.

It is a well to remember that the traits mentioned above may have become a learned behaviour which may persist even after castration.  In some cases a learned behaviour which may persist even after castration.  In some cases it may be as long as four to six months befoe the effect of castration becomes apparent.
Guarding ability, intelligence, playfulness and owner-affection are not usually sigificantly altered in the castrated male.

ARDEN GRANGE WEANING PUPPY is an easily digestible, extremely palatable
FRESH CHICKEN based food, which contains highly concentrated calories that puppies need at this all important rapid growth stage. To add extras will upset the fine balance our nutritionists have formulated for your puppy. When feeding Arden Grange, it is important to remember that puppies and adult dogs do not require additional milk in their daily diets. In fact, shortly after weaning they lose the ability to digest the milk sugar, lactose that is present in any mammals milk and its consumption therefore can cause digestive problems such as diarrhoea. However, it is important to provide a plentiful supply of fresh, clean water available at all times

IS THE FEMALE DOG THE RIGHT DOG FOR YOU

Althought bitch  owning can involve some additional problems and responsibilities, many owner
consider that these are far outweighed by the benefits. In comparison with dogs, bitches are generally:
More companionable
More biddable
Less likely to roam
Less aggressive to particularly to other dogs
the attentive bitch onwer should have at least a fundamental knowledge of the matter described,so that correct action can be taken should a promblem occur,or if any differences from the normal observed.
The informed owner will know when to seek adive from a veterinary surgeon or a breeder, how to describe the problem ,and understand the advice given so to implement it effectively.

BITCHES IN HEAT

Signs and Frequency
Most bitches reach puberty when they are between six and seven months of age,but possibly as early as four months or as late as two years. At this time the bitch's vulva will become enlarged and a varying amount of blood stained fluid is passed -the bitch is said to have "come on heat"or,to be in season".
Some bitches may shows signs of abdominal discomfort, increased excitability, and be less inclined to eat for a few days before heat commences.Bitches become attractive to dogs, usually from the first day of heat, but mostly they are not interested in their admirers until seven to ten days have passed. At this stage the bitch is equally anxious to escape to meet the male.
Conception is more likely to occur if mating takes place ten to twelve days after the first obvious signs of heat are noticed, but can sometimes occur at earlier or later matings. Most bitches will subseguenlty "come ON heat" at intervals of six to nine moths throughout the rest of their lives- there is no equivalent to the menopause.

THE OESTROUS CYCLE

Pro-oestrus  Average 9 days this stange is the beginning of heat. The vuva is swollen and there is a blood stained discharge.Although the bitch is attractive to dogs she wil not allow them to mate her.

Oestrus    Average 9 days this stage is defined as the period when the bitch will accept the male. The vulva is much enlarged and turgid. The discharge is straw coloured rather than a blood stained.Ovulation occours about 2 days afterb the startb of oestrus

Met-oestrus    Average 90 days this stange occurs in the unmated bitch and hormones change equivalent to those seen in pregnancy occur. At the end of this stage the bitch may show signs of false pregnancy. The beginning of this staged and its end are not marked by any obvious external signs

Anoestrus      Variable -but on average 2half months   The duration of anoestrus largely determines how frequently the bitch will come in season. This is the period of sexual inactivity

FALSE PREGNANCY

This term is used to describe the condition in which bitches show the signs of pregnancy, nursing and lactation, and yet no puppies, either because they have not mated or have failed to conceive. The signs occur late in the met-oestrus,i.e. one to two months after the bitch has been on heat, and vary in type and severity from one bitch to another.Characteristically, however ,most bitches will produce milk and display obvious maternal behaviour. Many of them show nervous signs including panting and breathlessness.Alot of bitches will carry shoes and other toys around the house and collect them in their beds.In serve cases, some bitches will actually strain as if they are producing a litter.Once a bitch has had false pregnancy she will probably have it again after each heat with the signs becoming progressively more severe on each occasion.
With regards to treatment,it is worth noting that the condition is really a normal occurrence in that something like 60 per cent of bitches have false pregnancy to a degree.Indeed,in the wild state or in a breeding kennel a false pregnant bitches will be capable of nursing a litter from a bitch that has died,so the condition serves a useful purpose. Thus if the signs sre mild it is probably better not to give treatment. The nervous signs will disappear more quickly if the bitch is denied sympathy and if toys and brooding objects are removed.Less milk will be produced if the carbohydrates content in the diet is reduced, and the amount of exercise is increased. If the signs are severe and the above actions does not lead to an improvement, veterinary assistance shold be sought.A course of hormone tablets or a hormone injection may help and in some cases it may may be considered necessary to bathe the mammaary glands to help the milk to be reabsorbed.Sedatives may be required to control the nervous signs, especially if the bitch is very disturbed and cannot rest.Veterinary surgeons often advice that bitches that have severe false pregnancy be spayed, since bitches that do not come on heat do not have false pregnancy.
The chemical control of heat by giving regular hormone injections help reduce the incidence of false pregnancy
